Character Feature: Lenneth Mahariel

Journal Entry: Tue May 1, 2012, 9:43 AM

Lenneth Mahariel it may be said, is above all else, a survivor. Losing her childhood friend and love Tamlen, had instilled great disquiet in her, and the fear of losing someone else made her determined to be a protector and cherish what moments she had with someone. This does not make her solely an idealist, trying to be pragmatic as possible but still striving to be there for everyone.

Even under as eclectic a group as the Grey Wardens, who were always a colorful bunch, she found herself under much scrutiny for being both an elf and a woman. To lead the armies of Ferelden she HAD to be command the respect of everyone should she even be able to earn it. Defeating the Archdemon helped but there was those who said she was only a figurehead to the true combatants of that battle. Becoming Arlessa of Amaranthine was also a challenge as large at the Archdemon, though with time, the petite Dalish commander named Lenneth Mahariel became a name said with great respect. She was always seen when a problem would arise and would intimately be involved with matters of the country, often being the one to end problems before they began.

Despite falling in love with Alistair, she convinced him to be the ruler of Ferelden and lead the country to glory. This is not to say however, that they did not continue their relationship. Their sole duty is to serve the country and protect not only their future, but the future of everyone, even if that means they cannot always be together.

Q: Aneth ara, Warden Commander. Thank you for taking time to speak to us of your place in our clan's history. Will you tell us about how you came to leave the clan?
A:
I hope you're not expecting anything grandiose and full of griffons. No? Ah well it is not something as romantic as the fabricated tale of my parents, much more depressing I'm afraid. This misadventure began and ended when my clansmate, Tamlen, decided we explore some ruins these humans we scared off had raved about. It seemed harmless enough. This 'demon' they warned us about, I thought, might have just been another hallucination their ignorance made possible. Tamlen also needed something to cover his ass for getting in trouble with the Keeper after we brawled. I know she cut him some slack for his sad attempt at flirtation, we all knew, but long story short it was there we encountered the Eluvian. That moment I'll always remember as one of my greatest failures...curiosity got the better of him...I was poisoned with the darkspawn taint and my only hope to survive was to become a Grey Warden, thus my reason for leaving.

Q: Was more ever discovered about the dark mirror that took your friend?
A:
Other than another one of those blasted things took another of my friends? She was very much alive when it did, at least, as far as I know... Anyways yes, we did, however not much sadly. In Arlathan, it was used for means of communication and the extent of that is still a mystery to me. A rather strange mage boy that helped me find said friend was very interested in it, maybe he'll find out more. I don't know honestly, all I know is that I will want to destroy it as soon as I get Morrigan back. The pitiful thing doesn't even show me my reflection, it is even more detestable.

Q: You were one of the few survivors who fought at Ostagar. Were you the only Dalish on the field that fought alongside the shem?
A:
No, no, I was not the only one. We Dalish long ago had accepted to be a part of the Rite of Conscription in the Warden's time of need. The clan in the Brecillian forest had promised to help our cause after we cleared up some...issues they had. I heard they fought valiantly in the battle. I make a point to say that I 'heard', because at that point, everyone looked the same to me. What with blood on your face, hair frazzled and swinging almost as violently as Oghren does when drunk makes it a little difficult to discern the details. This is to say there were no friendly casualties on my end!

Q: Do you believe that our clan leaders prepared you for this test?
A:
In a way yes, but I don't think anyone could prepare you for leaving your family and....love behind just like that. I don't think anyone could have prepared me. I was still very much a child then and it took seeing what happened at Ostagar for me to remember that everyone suffers loss.
I had to get past my ignorance to survive, As we all do.

Q: What did you find hardest to adapt to outside the clan?
A:
Cultures and Religions other than my own, and constantly finding myself offending people unintentionally…Thank goodness for the gifts the dwarf had with him, I know material wealth isn't the key to happiness but it's difficult when everyone has their own idea of what is good and bad. Makes me wonder if that is how the rich become wealthy, being constantly offended and demanding recompense.

Q: Shem are well known for their brutality and superstitious ignorance. Is it true that the shem believe they should bath in the blood of our Dalish virgins to keep young?
A:
Oh ahahaha some did but I helped spread a delicious rumor of my own to stem the tide. It's a little something of the opposite, where we must drink their blood keep us young. Do you see this face? clearly someone has had to die for this. The shem believed it.

Q: You have brought much pride to the clan for your achievements, not just in defeating the Blight, but in bringing honor to the name of the Dalish. Yet there are those who accuse you of having chosen shem over your own kind. Do you have anything to say to their accusations?
A:
I have chosen to serve this country and save it from peril not to take part in petty superiority games of who is better than who. However if this is about Alistair and my being the 'Shem King's whore' then I pity your jealousy, the man is a stallion in bed...and I love him of course.

Q: What adventures taught you most? What can our fellow clansmen best learn from your experiences?
A:
Get poisoned more often? Or less? Actually that's terrible advice...or it might be great advice spoken poorly...What I meant to say is that it took me getting poisoned to see the world and all it's glory. We are so focused on our past, wistful for a perfect future that we neglect what we have now and do not see the beauty before us. Life is but a fleeting dream and far too often do we find ourselves dreaming about it rather than living it. A friend once told me that if you cannot change your situation, you must change yourself and I have never found more true words.

Q: Thank you for your time, Warden Commander.
A:
Of course. Dareth shiral. Give my regards to the clan.

About :iconsorael-ignis:

"I’m an artist, writer and muscian. Most of my work posted online is fanart but my more personal work is kept to myself. I'm going to be going to school for video game design and hopefully being a part of designing characters, concepts and the like. My favorite game is the Mass Effect series but Dragon Age really crept up on my heart and will not leave. Due to this, I plan on making a series of small comics with Lenneth and her misadventures, maybe even my Xev Shepard. Later when I get the chance, I also plan on making some fantasy visual novels. When I'm not doing art, I'm either playing games, playing my viola or biking/long boarding."
